Modern Spa Oasis

This backyard spa retreat’s concrete pad with black polished stones really leans into the contemporary look, while the wood deck and fence make the space warm and inviting. Overhead, the white and cream-colored shade sails not only look great but they also provide privacy from neighboring windows and help the backyard feel more like a room than a fishbowl. The highlights of the yard of course are the hot tub and custom-built fireplace, which includes a shelf to set your drinks on (the client’s own idea!). Low-maintenance evergreen shrubs are planted in a row behind the deck and a large, white, cube-shaped pot has a Himalayan Birch tree planted in it with up lights to help it stand out at night.

Modern Spa Oasis

The client’s existing deck was too small and barely fit their existing patio furniture. The solution was to build a larger deck made of Ipe wood and push it closer to the fence so the rest of the backyard felt more open and less cramped. Before Blessing Landscapes arrived, the client had had a contractor install a gas fire pit in the ground at the end of the existing patio (not recommended by the way) which quickly failed, so a new beautiful custom fire pit was installed onto the deck.

A Need for More Privacy

The existing fence didn’t provide much privacy and didn’t fit the contemporary style, so a taller more modern fence was built. The height of the new fence plus the shade sails above help to block out views into the neighboring windows. The shade sails also help to cool the backyard space during the hot summer months and add a softness to the hard-edged look of the home. Even with the new deck there still wasn’t a lot of room for furniture so the remaining space in the backyard was paved with concrete slabs to extend the useability of the outdoor living space.
